| Prior to the hardwood plantations, this property was used for cattle grazing. It was neglected country with a poor fertiliser history. It had a scattering of indigenous vegetation such as yellow box, red gum, grey box and peppermint on the flats and lower slopes whilst white box and red stringybark dominated the upper slopes. To prepare for the planting of the seedlings, the plantation sites were ripped and mounded while all weeds were sprayed on the mounds. The seedlings were planted manually into the mounds in spring. The blue gum, spotted gum and yellow stringybark were fertilised at establishment. Significant vermin control was undertaken to remove rabbits, hares and deer from the site. Despite just 570 mm of rainfall in the first 12 months, the plantation has performed exceptionally well. |

Plantation Details
The plantation was established in October 2008. Four key species were planted - blue gum (12 ha), spotted gum (9 ha), sugar gum (9.4 ha) and yellow stringybark (4 ha).
Species were sited according to elevation, aspect and soils. Lower slopes with deeper soils contain blue gum and those with eastern aspect contain yellow stringybark. Elevated areas above severe frosts, with deeper soils contain spotted gum. Elevated areas with shallower soils contain sugar gum. |
